Fun at the Farmer's Market
Double Russian Poppy of Some Sort
I was given this dead looking root from a local flower shop for free two years ago. I was reluctant to take it because I didn't know anything about it or have any real place to put it. Well I stuck it in a small corner of dirt next to our stairs. The first year it became green but not one pod blossomed. Last year a few little pink flowers popped open. This year we were able to enjoy its full beauty. The boys frequently commented on the big pink colored flowers. I wanted to catch a picture of how big and beautiful they were so I talked the boys into posing for me. The pictures don't do the plant any justice but next year I hope some one will come and see it for themselves.
Egbert Reunion
With all the water that we have received in June there were quite a few of these "fairy" mushroom rings that popped up in our yard. Here is a random folklore picture.
Fairy rings also occupy a prominent place in European folklore as the location of gateways into elfin kingdoms, or places where elves gather and dance. According to the folklore, a fairy ring appears when a fairy, pixie, or elf appears. It will disappear without trace in less than five days, but if an observer waits for the elf to return to the ring, he may be able to capture it.
